Our Projects:
During the current year, we have changed our main objective. We will focus on celebrating the centenary of the discovery of the Santo Tomás endemics: La Fermina, El Cabrerito de la Ciénaga, and the Santo Tomás Gallinule, Zapata Rail.
We will delve into the biography of their discoverer, Fermín Zanón Cervera (1875–1944), from Godelleta, Valencia. We believe he is a person worthy of remembrance for all the achievements he attained.
Our work will be based on the texts of Florentino García Montaña and Thomas Barbour.
We hope that this immense effort of compilation will be of interest to you, as it once was to Professor Alfredo Nieto Dopico, the much-missed director of the CITMA of the Zapata Swamp. We will be conducting interesting interviews and would be grateful for any collaboration.
The figure of Fermín Zanón Cervera should not diminish the importance of Pablo Carvajal; on the contrary, according to Florentino, he was his true collaborator and friend. Nor will we forget Juanito Leal, from whom we have audio documents and very valuable contributions.
I believe that together—Spaniards and Cubans—we could make the years 2026 and 2027 truly emotional and memorable.
Throughout these years of research, I have always had the support of my friend and professor, Dr. Orlando Torres Fundora. Under the shadow of his wings, I have learned what I know about the birds of Cuba. A thousand thanks always, Professor.
